In Quinnipiac’s first national poll, President Obama has a lead over Republican rivals Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum.

According to the latest survey, Obama leads Romney 46 percent to 44 percent. Against Santorum, the president is up 47 to 44 among registered voters. Among independent voters, Obama has a 46 to 41 percent lead over Romney, and a 49 to 39 percent margin over Santorum. The poll has a 1.9 percent margin of error.

Despite edging both Republicans, Obama still is underwater with voters on questions about the economy.

A full majority — 55 percent — of voters disapprove of his handling of the economy, while 41 percent approve.  Voters are split over whether Obama or Romney would handle the economy better, with Romney holding a slight edge. According to the survey, 45 percent believe Romney would handle the economy better, versus 44 percent for Obama. Obama tops Santorum on the economy 46 – 42 percent. (Politico/Tau)
