My colleagues Robin Bravender and Ken Vogel report that the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action raised just $59,000 in January:
Priorities USA Action raised a mere $59,000 in January, an early sign of trouble for Democrats trying to compete against well-funded conservative groups.
Since the dismal January haul, the Obama administration decided to reverse course and bless the super PAC’s efforts, allowing top campaign staff and even some cabinet members to appear at Priorities USA events
Most of the group’s January haul came from John W. Rogers, CEO of Ariel Capital in Chicago, who cut a $50,000 check to the group on Jan. 17. Rogers served as co-chair of Obama’s Presidential Inaugural Committee in 2009 and was appointed by Obama as chairman of the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability. His ex-wife, Desiree Rogers, was social secretary at the White House; she resigned in 2010 after coming under fire when gate crashers attended a state dinner.
Of course, this fundraising total predates the Obama administration’s decision to encourage top donors to give to the outside effort, as well as the decision to allow cabinet officials and White House staffers to fundraise on their own time. (Politico/Tau)
