Obama is focused on policy, not questions about his faith, W.H. says

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday that President Obama is focused on policy and helping the middle class — not questions about his faith raised by Rick Santorum, Rev. Franklin Graham and others.

“I did meet with the president this morning and amazingly he didn’t bring this up,” Carney said. “This president is focused on doing the things that he believes the American people elected him to do.”

Santorum said over the weekend that Obama is guided by “some phony ideal, some phony theology.” He later said he was referring to Obama’s ties to environmentalism, but a spokesperson on MSNBC misspoke and said Santorum was referring to Obama’s ties to Islam. Graham said Tuesday that he was not sure that Obama was a Christian, but that he ‘assumed’ it was true.

“He firmly believes that getting an extra $40 in every paycheck is of vastly greater significance to most Americans than someone’s opinion expressed on cable television about his personal faith, which again, he has spoken about as explicitly as a few weeks ago,” Carney said, pointing reporters to President Obama’s remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast in early February.
