Two salt water aquariums, highlighting the coral and underwater life off the coast of Miami, will flank the backstop at the new Marlins Ballpark. Don’t fear for those fishes, if a foul ball hits the tanks, they will be made out of lexan, otherwise known as bulletproof glass. “Our new ballpark will be the pride of Miami and will showcase many of our community’s great attributes,” said Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria. “From the distinctive local ballpark cuisine and magnificent city views, to our unique home plate aquariums — nothing will better symbolize South Florida than our new ballpark. And as we quickly approach our 2012 opening, we look forward to unveiling new, exclusive features that will make our ballpark one of the greatest in the country.” These aquariums are being built by Living Color Enterprises, LLC in Fort Lauderdale. The aquariums will flank both sides of home plate, but not directly behind home plate, as not to interfere with the game. The right side aquarium will be 3 feet high by 34 feet long and will hold 600 gallons of sea water, while the tank on the left is 24 feet long, the same height, and will hold 450 gallons.

Jeffery Loria, owner of the Marlins, says the new ballpark will reflect Miami: “sleek, cool style punctuated with pastels and plenty of access to the outdoors”. The three paneled roof will open and close in thirteen minutes (essential for unpredictable Florida thunder storms), wide concourses, ample concessions, and a “Taste of Miami” food court.

From ESPN’s Jayson Stark: ” This time the future of the franchise is essentially secure, thanks to the 37,000-seat retractable-dome ballpark that has finally, really, no kidding, for sure, been approved for a 2012 opening.”
