Rubio taps former Cheney aide as chief of staff ..

WASHINGTON — Florida Senator Marco Rubio named a veteran conservative Washington hand, Cesar Conda, on Friday to be his chief of staff.

Conda was former Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief domestic policy advisor and helped devise the massive tax cuts that were enacted during George W. Bush’s presidency. The controversial tax cuts, including breaks for the rich, were recently extended by Congress.

His selection reinforces Rubio’s strategy of focusing on tax cuts as a way to try to spur economic growth.

Conda advised Rubio during last year’s Senate campaign and brings 25 years of experience as a staff member in the White House and Congress.

He was legislative director for former Senator Spencer Abraham, a Republican from Michigan. He also advised several Republican presidential candidates, including Bob Dole in 1996 and Mitt Romney in 2008.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to work with Senator Rubio as he pursues conservative alternatives to the policies coming out of Washington that are taking our country in the wrong direction,” Conda said.
